Weaving Loom

You never draw the pattern — you set the warp colours and the lift sequence, and the cloth is whatever those two rules make.

Weaving Loom is a free online weaving game that runs in the browser with no download and no account. An order card shows a swatch of cloth, and your job is to set up the loom that would produce it. There are exactly two things to decide, the same two a weaver decides: what colour each warp thread is, and which shaft rises on each pick of the weft. Wherever a warp thread is lifted its colour shows on the face of the cloth; everywhere else the weft crosses over the top. That is the whole model, and it means you cannot paint the pattern — you can only cause it. Change one lift in a four-pick sequence and a straight twill becomes a broken one across the entire cloth. Every order card is generated from a legal set-up rather than drawn by hand, so the swatch is always something the loom can actually weave, and the loom never opens on an order it has already matched. Twelve orders run from a two-pick stripe on eight threads up to an eight-pick sequence across twenty, with a six-colour yarn basket. Nothing is timed.

How to play Weaving Loom

  1. The dashed swatch on the left is the order. The cloth on the right is what your loom is currently weaving.
  2. The row of threads above your cloth is the warp. Tap one to change its colour; the number on it is the shaft it is tied to.
  3. The column of numbers beside your cloth is the lift sequence — one shaft per pick of weft. Tap a pick to change which shaft rises.
  4. Wherever a lifted warp thread crosses, its colour shows. Everywhere else the weft colour crosses over the top.
  5. The sequence repeats up the cloth, so a four-pick sequence sets the pattern for the whole piece.
  6. Weft Colour changes the thread going across. The button's edge shows the current colour.
  7. Press Compare to check your cloth against the order. The header shows the percentage of intersections that agree as you work.
  8. Match it exactly to unlock the next order. Fewer changes earns more stars, and nothing is timed.

Tips

  • Read the card's vertical stripes first — those come straight from the warp colours, one column each.
  • Then read the diagonals. A pattern that steps one thread to the side per row is a lift sequence of 1, 2, 3, 4; one that jumps is a broken sequence.
  • The weft colour is the one that shows *between* the lifted threads, so look at the background of the swatch rather than its stripes.
  • Shaft numbers repeat every fourth thread, so threads 1, 5, 9 and 13 always rise together. If the card lifts them separately, you are reading the wrong thing.
  • Change one lift at a time and watch what moves. Because the cloth is generated, a single change shows you the rule immediately.
  • The match percentage is a compass, not a score: nudge a thread and see whether it goes up.
  • Stars come from how few changes you made, so working out the sequence before tapping beats cycling every thread through every colour.

FAQ

Is Weaving Loom free to play?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All twelve orders are included and unlock as you match them.

Can I draw the pattern directly?

No, and that is the point. The cloth is a pure function of the warp colours and the lift sequence, so the only way to change it is to change the set-up — which is what weaving actually is.

How does the loom work?

Four shafts. Warp thread one is tied to shaft one, thread two to shaft two, and so on, repeating every fourth thread. Each pick raises one shaft, so every fourth warp thread rises together and the weft passes underneath them.

Why can I not change the threading?

Because with threading and lifting both variable, two different set-ups can weave the same cloth, and an order card would stop having a single answer. Fixing the threading keeps the puzzle honest.

Is every order card actually weavable?

Yes. Each card is generated from a legal set-up rather than drawn, so a matching arrangement always exists — and the loom never starts on a set-up that already matches.

Is it timed?

No. Stars come from how few changes you needed, so thinking is free.

What is a twill, in the game's terms?

A lift sequence that steps through the shafts in order — 1, 2, 3, 4 — which makes the diagonal you see in denim. Changing the order of those same four lifts gives you a broken twill or a herringbone instead.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The cloth keeps its aspect ratio from the thread counts, and every control is a tap.
