Paper Fold is a free online paper folding puzzle — the classic fold-and-punch question from reasoning tests, turned into a game. A square sheet is folded once, twice or three times, in half, off the middle or across a corner, and a hole is punched through every layer. Your job is to see the opened sheet in your head. Early levels ask you to pick it from three or four sheets; later ones make you tap every square that gets a hole, or show you the opened sheet and ask which square of the folded paper the punch went through. Half-moon and triangle holes flip over as each layer opens, so you have to follow which way they face as well as where they land. Every puzzle has exactly one right answer and every wrong sheet is a real mistake — a crease left shut, a flap slid instead of flipped — with a message that says which. Twelve levels of four puzzles, hints, and new puzzles each time you play again. Runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, no download.

How to play Paper Fold

  1. Each level has four puzzles. Read the pictures left to right: every fold shows a dashed red crease, the flap that moves tinted yellow and a blue arrow to where it lands. The last picture shows the punch going through the folded paper.
  2. Pick puzzles: tap the opened sheet you think is right, or press its number key, 1 to 4. A wrong sheet is crossed out and the message says what went wrong with it.
  3. Draw puzzles: tap every square of the blank sheet that will have a hole (tap again to take a mark off), then press Check. If it is not right yet, the message says how many holes are still missing and how many marked squares stay whole.
  4. Work-back puzzles: the opened sheet is shown, and the folded paper has a dotted ring on every square a punch could go through. Tap the one the punch really went through.
  5. To open the paper, undo the folds from the last to the first. Every hole on the part a flap landed on gets a mirror copy across that crease, where the flap came from. Half-moon and triangle holes are mirrored too, so they face the other way.
  6. Stars: three for no wrong answers in the level, two for a few, one for finishing. A hint crosses out a wrong sheet or square (or fixes one square of your drawing) and counts like a wrong answer. Play Again deals four new puzzles.

Tips

  • Count the layers first. A punch through four layers makes four holes, so any sheet with three or five holes is wrong before you even look where they are.
  • Open one crease at a time, starting with the last fold. Mirror every hole across that crease, then do the next crease back with all the holes you have so far.
  • A mirror copy sits the same distance from the crease on the other side. A hole right next to the crease gets a copy right next to it; a hole far from the crease gets a copy far away.
  • The paper gets darker where it is thicker. Off-centre folds leave some squares one layer thick, and a punch there makes fewer holes.
  • Half-moons and triangles flip over like a reflection. A half-moon bulging towards a crease has a copy bulging towards it from the other side; one bulging along the crease keeps facing the same way.
  • On work-back puzzles, count the holes on the opened sheet, then only look at squares of the folded paper with that many layers.

FAQ

Is Paper Fold free to play?

Yes. It runs in the browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All twelve levels are included and unlock one after another as you finish them.

How do you solve a paper folding and hole punching puzzle?

Unfold it in your head one crease at a time, starting with the last fold. Each time, every hole that went through the flap gets a mirror copy on the other side of the crease, the same distance away. When all the folds are open, the holes you have are the answer. Counting layers first is a quick check: a punch through four layers always makes four holes.

Why do the half-moon holes face different ways?

When a flap is folded over, it is turned upside down on top of the paper underneath. So when you open it, the hole in that layer is a mirror image of the one you punched: a half-moon that bulged towards the crease now bulges towards it from the other side. Holes on layers that never moved keep facing the way they were punched.

Is there always exactly one right answer?

Yes. Every puzzle is worked out two ways — by following each layer of paper back to where it started, and by opening the creases one at a time — and the game checks they agree. Every fold matters: leaving any crease shut changes the answer. On work-back puzzles exactly one square of the folded paper makes the sheet shown.

How are the stars worked out?

Three stars for finishing a level with no wrong answers. Two stars go to anything up to a line measured for each level from a test player who counts layers — so never picks a sheet with the wrong number of holes — and guesses the rest. A hint counts as one wrong answer. Any finish earns one star.

Is this the paper folding question from IQ and reasoning tests?

It is the same kind of question — fold, punch, then say what the opened sheet looks like — which appears in many non-verbal reasoning and aptitude tests. Paper Fold is a puzzle for practice and fun, not a test: it gives no IQ score or grade, only stars for each level.

Does Paper Fold work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap a sheet or a square to answer; on a phone held upright the folds sit above the answers, and on a wider screen beside them. It also plays fully from a keyboard: number keys pick a sheet, arrow keys move round the board, Space marks or punches, C checks, H asks for a hint and Enter goes on.
