Highway Racer is a free online traffic racing game about reading the road three cars ahead. You drive a fixed point on the screen while the motorway scrolls past, changing lanes to thread gaps and working the throttle to control how fast those gaps close. The traffic is not scenery: every car has its own speed, so a lorry doing 45 in lane two is a rolling roadblock you either commit to overtaking or sit behind until a gap opens. Twelve levels take you from a three-lane Sunday drive to five lanes of gridlock, each with a distance to cover and three lives to cover it with. How to play Highway Racer
- Your car holds its place near the bottom of the screen while the motorway scrolls past. Distance covered is your progress through the level.
- Tap the left or right half of the road to move one lane that way. Arrow keys and the on-screen arrows do the same thing.
- You accelerate automatically. Hold BRAKE (or the down arrow) to shed speed — the speedometer shows how fast you are actually going.
- Traffic moves at its own speed. What matters is the closing speed between you and the car ahead, not your speed alone.
- Touching another vehicle costs one of your three lives, drops you to a crawl, and gives you a moment of immunity so a single bump is a single life.
- Reach the chequered line at the level distance to clear it and unlock the next. Score counts the metres covered, the metres driven flat out, and the lives you finished with.
Tips
- Look at the top of the screen, not at your bonnet. By the time a car is level with you the decision was made two seconds ago.
- Braking is not losing. Dropping behind a lorry for a second to let the next lane clear beats squeezing into a gap that is already closing.
- Lane changes are instant, so you can chain two of them to cross from lane one to lane three — but check the far lane first, not just the next one.
- The speed bonus only counts metres driven above 80% of top speed, so a clean flat-out run scores far better than a cautious crawl to the line.
- Retry replays exactly the same traffic. If a level keeps catching you at the same point, that section is a fixed puzzle with a solution — find it rather than hoping for a kinder roll.
- Trucks always move slower than cars. When you see one, decide early whether you are passing it or settling in behind it.
