City Bus Driver is a free online bus driving game that runs in the browser with no download and no account. There is no traffic to weave through and nobody to overtake. The route is a street with stops along it, each with a painted box the doors have to line up with, and traffic lights that turn red. What is being graded is how you stop: the ride comfort meter drains whenever the bus brakes harder than a passenger will tolerate, and it is a single budget for the whole shift. The brake pedal ramps on rather than switching, so a short early press really is gentle and a late stamp really is not. Boarding takes real time — a busy stop can hold you for eight seconds — which is where the timetable pressure comes from, because braking early enough to be comfortable also costs you seconds. Eight routes run from a three-stop hop to a ten-stop rush hour express where the painted door box is under four metres wide.
How to play City Bus Driver
- Hold GO to pull away and BRAKE to slow down. The brake pedal comes on gradually, so a brief early press is soft and a long one is not.
- Every stop has a yellow box painted on the road. Bring the bus to a complete standstill with the doors inside it, then press DOORS.
- Boarding takes time — roughly a second per passenger, plus the doors themselves — and the bus cannot move at all while it is happening.
- The comfort meter at the top left is your whole shift. Braking harder than passengers tolerate drains it, and a full bus is more fragile than an empty one.
- Running a red light costs a chunk of comfort straight away. So does driving past a stop without working it.
- Passengers who get on at one stop want to get off at a later one, so the number aboard matters: you cannot deliver anyone you never picked up.
- Reach the terminus with every stop worked and the route counts. Miss even one and it does not, however good the rest of the shift was.
- Three stars needs comfort of eighty or better, no red lights, and the doors landing within half a box on average.
Tips
- Start braking about four bus lengths out at full speed. The pedal ramp means the deceleration builds — if you leave it late, the only way to stop in the box is the setting that hurts.
- Brake in pulses rather than one long press. Easing on and off keeps the deceleration under the comfort threshold and still stops you on the mark.
- Pulling away is free. The engine cannot accelerate hard enough to bother anyone, so there is no reason to feather the throttle out of a stop.
- Look at the light, not the road. A red light you stop for costs you a few seconds; one you drive through costs eighteen comfort, which is most of a star.
- An empty bus can be handled roughly. The first stop or two are the cheapest place to make up time, because comfort is charged against the number of people aboard.
- Never write off a stop to save the clock. A missed stop fails the route outright, and it also costs more comfort than any single braking mistake.
- New Timetable regenerates the stops and lights at the same difficulty; Restart Shift replays the identical route, which is what you want while you learn where the lights fall.
FAQ
Is City Bus Driver free to play?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All eight routes are included and unlock as you complete them.
What is the ride comfort meter?
It is one budget for the whole shift, and it drains whenever the bus decelerates harder than passengers will put up with. Red lights and missed stops take a fixed chunk out of it too. Empty it and the shift ends in complaints.
Why will the doors not open?
Two reasons only: the bus is still moving, or the doors are not inside the painted box. Rolling through the box does nothing at all — the stop has to be a proper standstill.
How is this different from the other driving games here?
Highway Racer wants you fast and Off-Road Truck wants you slow. This one wants you smooth: the pedal is a resource rather than a control, and the score is the quality of eight or ten stops.
Does accelerating cost comfort too?
No. The engine cannot pull hard enough to cross the comfort threshold, which is deliberate — the brake can pull nearly twice what the engine can, so the cost in this game belongs entirely to stopping.
What happens if I miss a stop?
You lose comfort immediately and the route will not count when you reach the terminus, even if everything else was perfect. There is no reversing back to it, so it is worth braking for a stop you have nearly passed.
Is the timetable tight?
It has about eight per cent slack over a careful run, so the shift is meant to be lost on comfort rather than on the clock. It exists mainly so a bus parked at the depot does not sit there forever.
Does City Bus Driver work on a phone?
Yes. BRAKE, DOORS and GO sit across the bottom of the screen under your thumbs, and the street is drawn into the host portrait frame on small screens.
