Free Trick-Taking Card Games Online
13 free trick-taking games, all
playable straight in the browser.
A trick is one card from every player, and the highest card of the suit that was led takes it — unless someone could not follow suit and played a trump. Every game on this page is built on that one rule, and what separates them is what you are trying to do with the tricks. Whist simply counts them. Bridge and Spades make you bid a number first and pay you for hitting it, Oh Hell punishes you for taking even one too many, Hearts makes most tricks a liability, and Euchre and Five Hundred raise the jacks of the trump colour, the bowers, above the ace.
Most of them are partnership games, so the computer sits opposite you as your partner as well as on both sides as your opponents, and each one plays only from the cards in its own hand. The European games — Skat, Belote, Briscola and Truco — count card points inside the tricks instead of the tricks themselves, and Shengji adds a trump rank that climbs from 2 to the ace. Everything runs in the browser with nothing to install and no account.
Trick-taking questions
Which trick-taking game should I learn first?
Whist. It is the plain ancestor of Bridge and Spades: thirteen tricks, a trump suit, follow suit if you can, and no bidding to learn. Once winning tricks feels natural, Spades adds a simple bid and Bridge adds the full auction and the dummy.
What is the difference between Bridge, Spades and Euchre?
Bridge picks its trump suit in an auction and the winning side plays with one hand laid face up as the dummy. Spades always has spades as trump and each player bids their own number of tricks. Euchre is played with a short deck of 24 cards, five cards each, and the jacks of the trump colour outrank the ace.
Can I play these card games alone, without other people?
Yes. Every game here fills the other seats with computer players, including your partner in the partnership games, so a full four-handed game of Bridge, Spades or Euchre starts the moment you open the page.
What does "follow suit" mean?
If you hold a card of the suit that was led to the trick, you must play one. Only when you have none of that suit may you play a trump or throw away anything else. The games here enforce it for you by only letting you play legal cards.
