The car steers itself — you work the gearbox. Shift up in the green band, drop gears before the corners, and beat three rivals.

Formula Race is a free online single-seater racing game that runs in the browser with no download and no account. There is no steering at all: the car follows the circuit and everything you can do is shift up or shift down. Revs climb while you are in gear, and the green band just under the redline is where you want to catch the next one — shift there and the engine keeps pulling, shift early and it drops out of the power, leave it too long and the limiter cuts in and you simply stop accelerating. Then the corners run it the other way. Each one has a speed limit printed on the strip along the bottom of the screen, and arriving above it costs real time, so you have to be down two or three gears before you get there. Eight circuits, three rivals whose whole difference from you is how well they judge those two things.

How to play Formula Race

  1. The dial is your rev counter. The green arc near the top is the power band — that is where an upshift should happen.
  2. Tap SHIFT UP to take the next gear. Do it in the green and the engine keeps pulling into the new gear; do it early and the revs collapse.
  3. Leave it too long and the needle pins at the redline. The limiter holds you there, so waiting past the band gains you nothing at all.
  4. The strip along the bottom shows the road ahead. Each bar is a corner with its speed limit written beside it.
  5. A bar is green while you would get through it at your current speed and red while you would not. Tap SHIFT DOWN until it goes green.
  6. Arriving over the limit means running wide: you lose time and most of your revs, and the faster you were the worse it is.
  7. Arrow keys work on desktop — up shifts up, down shifts down. One press is one gear.
  8. Finish first to unlock the next circuit. The dots down the right edge show where everyone is.

Tips

  • Watch the needle, not the road, on a straight. The band is a place on the dial rather than a number, so shifting becomes something you see rather than something you calculate.
  • Shifts get further apart as you go up the box. Each gear revs more slowly than the last, so the rhythm of a lap slows down rather than speeding up.
  • Start braking when the bar turns red, not when it gets close. The colour already accounts for your speed, which is the whole reason it is drawn that way.
  • Two gears is usually enough for a corner and three is usually too many. Dropping further than you need costs you the exit as well as the entry.
  • A corner you run wide at costs you the next straight too, because you lose your revs as well as the time. That is why the penalty compounds down a lap.
  • Do not upshift inside a braking zone. Grabbing a higher gear on the way into a corner is the single most common way to arrive over the limit.
  • The rivals differ from you in exactly two ways — where they shift and how well they judge an entry speed. Beating the fastest of them is a matter of getting both right, not of finding a hidden trick.

FAQ

Is Formula Race free to play?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All eight circuits are included and unlock as you win them.

Why can I not steer?

Because the game is the gearbox. Kart Grand Prix already covers steering a racing line; this one strips the driving down to the two decisions a gearbox gives you, which is a completely different skill.

What is the green band for?

It is the top slice of the rev range before the redline. An upshift taken inside it keeps far more of your revs than one taken below it, so catching it is what keeps the car accelerating cleanly through the box.

What happens if I hit the redline?

Nothing breaks, but the revs stop climbing. The limiter holds them there, so you are stuck at that gear's top speed until you shift. Hanging on past the band never gains you anything.

How do I know how much to slow down for a corner?

The bar on the strip turns green as soon as your current speed would get through cleanly. There is no judgement needed — shift down until it is green.

What does running wide actually cost?

Time proportional to how far over the limit you were, plus about half your revs. Being a little over is survivable; arriving in top gear at a slow corner is not.

Do the rivals cheat?

No. They run the same gearbox, the same track and the same penalties. Their skill setting controls where they shift and how accurately they judge a corner entry, and nothing else.

Does Formula Race work on a phone?

Yes. The dial scales to the screen and the two shift paddles split the width across the bottom, which suits two thumbs in portrait.
