Tennis Match is a free online tennis game about shot choice rather than reflexes. There is no bat to drag: every ball is two decisions and a moment. You choose where to put it — five places across the court — and which shot to play, from a safe topspin to a flat drive, a slice that buys you time, a drop shot that dies short or a lob over somebody standing too close. Then you hit it as the timing bar crosses the middle, and a forgiving shot gives you a wider window than a fast one does. The rival has to run for everything, and how far it can get is worked out from how long your ball takes to arrive — so a ball into the open court is a winner only if you have already pulled them out of position. Being stretched costs you too: a ball taken at full reach is struck worse than one taken standing still, which is what makes a rally build rather than reset. Real tennis scoring, deuce and advantage included, and six matches from the club courts to a centre court rival who covers nearly everything. No download, no account.
How to play Tennis Match
- Each ball is two choices: where to hit it, from five places across the court, and which of the five shots to play.
- Then press Hit as the sweeping bar crosses the middle. The nearer the middle, the better the ball comes off.
- The shaded part of the timing bar is your window, and it is wider for a forgiving shot than for a fast one.
- Topspin is safe and deep. Flat is fast but unforgiving. Slice is slow and buys you time to get back.
- A drop shot lands short and dies; a lob goes over a rival standing too close. Neither is a trick — both are answers to a particular position.
- The rival runs for everything. Whether it gets there depends on how far it has to go and how long your ball takes.
- So a ball into the open court only wins the point if the rival is already out of position — move them first, then hit where they are not.
- Being stretched costs you as well: a ball taken at full reach is struck worse than one taken standing still.
- Scoring is real tennis — 15, 30, 40, deuce and advantage — and the serve changes hands every game.
- Take the set by the target number of games, two clear. On a keyboard, 1 to 5 choose a target, the arrows change shot and space hits.
Tips
- Never hit two balls to the same place. The rival recovers towards the middle while your ball is in the air, so the second one is easy.
- A ball down the middle is a gift: the rival attacks it and you are the one running. It is the single most expensive habit in the game.
- Use slice when you are out of position. It is slow, which is exactly what you need — it buys you the time to get back to the middle.
- Play the drop shot when the rival is deep and moving the other way, not as a surprise for its own sake.
- Flat is the shot for a ball you have earned. Played off a stretch it goes wrong more often than any other.
- Watch your own figure: when it shrinks you were at full stretch, and the next ball you hit will be worse than it looks.
- Two clear games takes the set, so a break back is worth as much as a break.
- On the later matches the rival covers almost everything. Open the court with two shots rather than trying to end it with one.
FAQ
Is Tennis Match free to play?
Yes. It runs in the browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All six matches are included and unlock as you win them.
How is this different from the table tennis game here?
Table Tennis is about moving a bat to meet a ball that has height and spin. Nothing is dragged here: a rally is a sequence of choices about where to put the ball and what shot to play, and the court is wide enough that the rival has to run.
How do I actually win a point?
By hitting where the rival cannot get to in time. Their reach is worked out from how far they have to run and how long your ball takes to arrive, so the same shot is a winner against a rival already pulled wide and an easy ball against one standing in the middle.
Why do my shots go wrong after I have been made to run?
Because a ball taken at full stretch is struck worse than one taken standing still. That is the pressure in the game — being moved does not lose you the point directly, it spoils the shot you play next. Without it the best strategy was to stand in the middle and never move, which beat every level.
What is the timing bar for?
It decides how well the ball comes off. Inside the shaded window the shot goes where you aimed; outside it the ball drifts towards the middle and sits up short; well outside it is an error. The window is wider for a topspin than for a flat drive, which is the trade the shot buttons are offering.
Is the scoring real tennis scoring?
Yes — 15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage, and a set needs two clear games. Deuce is the part people get wrong, so the tests play out the awkward sequences rather than trusting the code: six points to deuce, advantage, back to deuce, and only two in a row finish it.
Do the matches actually get harder?
Yes, and it is measured. Three bots play twenty sets of each match: one that hits into the open court with about the timing of a good club player, one that hits everything down the middle, and one that aims at random. The placer takes every set on the first three matches and about half on the last two; hitting down the middle stops working from the third; random never wins one at all.
How many matches are there?
Six, from a club court rival who mis-times one ball in ten to a centre court one who mis-times one in forty-five, covers a third more ground and almost always finds the open court.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Everything is a button — five targets, five shots and Hit — so there is nothing to drag, and the shots wrap onto two rows on a narrow screen.
