Button Mash is a free online button masher game. Every press of a key, click or tap is one stroke of a balloon pump, and you race three rivals at a funfair booth — Dotty, Max and Tess — to be the first to pop. Pure speed wins the first stages, but the pumps soon change: a twin pump that only works if you alternate left and right, a hot pump that jams if you mash past its red line, a leaky balloon that shrinks when you stop, and a lamp that turns red, when every press lets air out. Pop your balloon in time to clear a stage, finish in the top two for two stars and win for three. There is also a Speed Test: mash for 5, 10 or 30 seconds and see how many presses a second you reach. Works on a phone, a tablet or a computer — no download, no sign-up.

How to play Button Mash

  1. Pick a stage and press Start, Enter, any letter key, or tap the booth. After a three-count the race begins: you and three rivals each have a hand pump and a balloon.
  2. Every press is one stroke of your pump and one puff of air. Mash any letter key, Space or the left or right arrow, click, or tap the screen — drumming two fingers on two keys is faster than one finger. A key held down does not repeat.
  3. Fill your balloon to the stage’s number of puffs and it pops. The first balloon to pop wins the race; the bar under each pump shows how full every balloon is.
  4. On a twin pump only alternating strokes pump: a key on the left of the keyboard (A, S, D, F or the left arrow) works the left handle and one on the right (J, K, L, Space or the right arrow) the right handle, or tap the left and right halves of the screen. The same handle twice in a row is a slip and pumps nothing.
  5. On a hot pump every stroke warms the gauge beside the barrel and it cools all the time. Reach the red line and the pump jams for 1.6 seconds before it vents, so mash hard and then ease off near the top.
  6. A leaky balloon loses air all the time, so stopping costs you. When the lamp over the booth turns red, take your hands off: the first press on a red lets one puff out, the next two, then three, and so on. Amber warns you before red on most stages.
  7. Pop your balloon before the stage’s time runs out to clear it and unlock the next. Finish in the top two for two stars and first for three. Press Speed Test to measure how many presses a second you can mash over 5, 10 or 30 seconds.

Tips

  • Drum two fingers — index and middle, or two thumbs on a phone — on two different keys or two spots on the screen. Alternating is faster than one finger, and on a twin pump it is the only way that pumps.
  • On a hot pump, mash flat out until the gauge is most of the way up, then press at a steady, slightly slower pace that keeps it just under the red line. A jam costs far more than easing off does.
  • Watch the lamp, not your fingers. Stopping a moment late costs one puff; mashing straight through a red can empty your balloon.
  • On a leaky balloon never stop: even a slow, steady press beats bursts with pauses in between.
  • A tap on a phone counts the moment your finger lands, so short, light taps are quicker than full presses. Each finger counts on its own, so two thumbs work well.
  • Stuck on a stage? Try the Speed Test first: if you reach about 7 presses a second you can keep up with Max, and about 8.5 with Tess.

FAQ

Is Button Mash free to play?

Yes. Button Mash is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and nothing to buy. All twelve stages and the Speed Test are here; the stages unlock in order.

How do I play a button masher game?

Press a button as many times as you can, as fast as you can. Here every press — any letter key, Space or the left or right arrow, a mouse click or a tap — is one stroke of your balloon pump, and the first of four balloons to pop wins the race.

Which keys can I mash?

Any letter key, any number key, Space and the left and right arrows. On a twin pump the keys on the left half of the keyboard (Q to T, A to G, Z to B and the left arrow) work the left handle, and the keys on the right half (Y to P, H to L, N to the slash, Space and the right arrow) the right handle. Escape pauses, and once a race is over Enter starts the next one — the next stage if you have unlocked it.

Does holding a key down count?

No. A held key repeats on its own, and those repeats are ignored: only real presses pump. Two presses on the same key less than 25 milliseconds apart also count once, so a bouncing key does not pump twice.

Who are the rivals and how fast do they mash?

Dotty, Max and Tess press about 5.5, 7 and 8.5 times a second, ordinary rates for a casual, a regular and a quick player in a ten-second tap test. They tire a little over a long race, slip now and then on a twin pump, react to the lamp after a moment, and handle a hot pump the way such players do: Dotty mashes on regardless, Max eases right off when the gauge is high and Tess holds it just under the red line.

How do I get three stars?

Pop your balloon before the stage’s time runs out for one star, finish in the top two for two stars, and beat all three rivals for three. Every race the game deals has first been run by a simulated player pressing 9 times a second without a slip, a jam or a foul, and that player won it, so three stars is always within reach of a quick hand.

What happens if I keep mashing on a red light?

Each press on a red lets air out of your balloon: one puff for the first press, two for the next, three for the one after, and so on until the lamp turns green. Stopping a moment late costs little, but mashing straight through a red can empty your balloon, and players who ignore the lamp never clear a lamp stage.

Why does my pump jam?

On a hot pump every stroke warms the gauge beside the barrel, and it cools all the time. If you mash faster than the pump can cool and the gauge reaches the red line, the pump jams for 1.6 seconds, ignoring every press, then vents part of its heat. Ease off when the gauge is high and it never jams.

How is the time for each stage set?

It is measured, not guessed. Three simulated players — casual, regular and sharp — race every stage 41 times, and the stage’s time is set so most casual players pop their balloon within it: 95 in 100 on the first stage, fewer on later ones, down to half on the Grand Final.

What is the Speed Test?

A classic tap speed test, like a click speed or CPS test. Choose 5, 10 or 30 seconds; the clock starts with your first press, and you see how many presses you made and how many that is a second, with a title from Sleepy Snail to Lightning Fingers. Your best for each length is kept on this device.

Is the game the same whatever my screen’s frame rate?

Yes. The race runs on a fixed clock of 120 steps a second, and every press counts from the moment it happened, not from the next frame drawn. A 60 Hz phone and a 144 Hz monitor run exactly the same race.

Does Button Mash work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap anywhere on the booth to pump; on a twin pump tap the left and right halves of the screen in turn. Every finger counts on its own, so two thumbs are fastest. The game does not zoom on quick double taps, and the game plays upright or sideways.
