Typing Speed Race is a free online typing test built as a game. A passage appears, the clock starts on your first keystroke, and you type it exactly — every correct character turns green, a wrong one turns red and locks the passage until you press backspace, which is how a real typing test keeps accuracy honest. Speed is measured the standard way: correct characters divided by five, per minute, so the number you get here is directly comparable with any other typing test you have taken. Twelve levels build from three-letter words at 15 WPM up to a mixed passage of long and awkward words needing 70. Every passage is generated from a seed, so Retry gives you the identical text to practise and New Passage deals a fresh one at the same difficulty.

How to play Typing Speed Race

  1. Click the passage (or the green button) to focus it, then start typing. The clock does not start until your first keystroke, so take a moment to read.
  2. Type the passage exactly as written, spaces included. Correct characters turn green as you go.
  3. A wrong character turns red and the passage stops accepting input. Press backspace to clear it and carry on — this is what stops speed being bought with sloppiness.
  4. Your live speed in words per minute and your accuracy are shown above and below the passage.
  5. Finish the whole passage above the level's WPM target to clear the level. Running out of time ends the race wherever you got to.
  6. Retry Passage replays the exact same text so you can practise it. New Passage generates a different one at the same difficulty.

Tips

  • Accuracy is speed. A single mistake costs you the keystroke, the backspace and the retype — three strokes for one character — so slowing down slightly almost always raises your WPM.
  • Do not look at the keyboard. If you are hunting for keys, start on the early levels with three-letter words and build the muscle memory before chasing a number.
  • Keep your eyes one or two words ahead of the cursor. Reading ahead is what separates a 40 WPM typist from a 70 WPM one, far more than finger speed.
  • The awkward-keys level is deliberately full of z, q, x and j. If it wrecks your accuracy, that is a specific weakness worth drilling — retry the same passage a few times.
  • Type the spaces deliberately. Space is the most frequently typed key in any passage and a rushed thumb is a common source of the red lock-out.

FAQ

Is Typing Speed Race free to play?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no download, no account, and no in-game purchases. Level progress and your best WPM save on your own device.

How is WPM calculated?

The standard way: correct characters divided by five, divided by elapsed minutes. Five characters is the conventional definition of a "word" in typing tests, which is what makes scores comparable between them.

Why can I not carry on after a mistake?

The passage locks until you backspace, the same rule most typing tests use. It stops a run being finished with a trail of errors behind it and it is why accuracy is worth playing for.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 words per minute is average for an adult, 60 to 70 is comfortably fast, and above 90 is professional territory. This game's twelve levels run from 15 up to 70, so the top level is genuinely quick rather than impossible.

Can I play it on a phone?

You can — tapping the passage opens the on-screen keyboard — but a typing test is really a physical-keyboard exercise, and the WPM you get on a phone is not comparable with a desktop score.
