Foosball is a free online table football game that runs in your browser with no download and no account. It is a proper eight-rod table seen from above — keeper, defence, midfield and attack on each side, interleaved the way a real one is, so a ball you clear still has to pass two of their rods to get out. The constraint is what makes it foosball: a rod is men at fixed spacing that slide together, so you can never put a man where you like. You can only choose which of the gaps between them the ball goes through. Aiming works the same way. A kick does not go where you point it, because you cannot point anything — it goes where the strike point sends it, straight down the table off the middle of the foot and out at an angle off the toe. Lining a man slightly off the ball before you swing is the whole of shooting, and it is the difference between a shot that finds the corner and one that hits the twenty men standing in the way. The rod you are driving is the one nearest the ball and it lights up, so play moves from rod to rod without you choosing. Six opponents make up the ladder and what changes is how fast their rods slide, because getting a man in front of the ball in time is what the game is. Two and a half minutes, or first to three.

How to play Foosball

  1. Up and down slide the rod that is lit. That is always whichever of your rods is nearest the ball, so it changes as play moves and you never have to pick one.
  2. Space, or the KICK pad, swings the rod. A swing only reaches a ball that is in front of one of the men on it, and only within about eleven centimetres.
  3. You cannot aim by pointing. The ball goes where the strike point sends it: straight down the table off the middle of the foot, and out at an angle off the toe.
  4. So line the man slightly off the ball before you swing. Half a man high sends it low, half a man low sends it high, and that is the whole of shooting.
  5. A ball caught right at the edge of the foot gets less of the swing, so the widest angles are also the weakest shots.
  6. Men on a rod sit at fixed spacing and slide together. Covering one gap opens another — deciding which gap to leave is the defending.
  7. Your rods are interleaved with theirs, so your attack rod sits in their half. A cleared ball is not safe: it has to pass two of their rods on the way out.
  8. The ball is served back into the middle after every goal, and the serve alternates so neither side is fed.
  9. A ball that stops where nobody can reach it is put back into play after three seconds rather than left sitting.
  10. First to three wins it. If neither side gets there in two and a half minutes, whoever leads takes it and level is a draw.
  11. Beat an opponent to unlock the next. Progress is kept in your own browser.

Tips

  • Stop trying to blast it straight. Down the middle of the table is where all twenty men are standing — the angle off the toe is the only thing that goes round them.
  • Watch which man the lit rod will play the ball with, not the rod as a whole. It is the one man that matters.
  • Defending, put a man in the line of the ball rather than trying anything clever. A block you keep is worth more than a clearance you miss.
  • Your keeper has the most travel of any rod. It is the one that can actually cover a corner, so do not leave it parked in the middle.
  • A ball rolling slowly along the wall is the easiest one to line up on, because you have time to choose the strike point rather than just reaching it.
  • The later opponents get a man there first because their rods move quicker, not because they read the game better. Beat them by being lined up before the ball arrives.

FAQ

Is Foosball free to play?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no plugin, no sign-up and nothing to buy. The first opponent is open straight away and the rest unlock by winning.

Which rod am I controlling?

Whichever of yours is nearest the ball, and it is lit so you can see it. The control follows play from rod to rod, so you never lose a second choosing one — which is the part of real foosball that does not survive a keyboard.

How do I aim a shot?

By where the ball meets the foot. Hit it with the middle of a man and it goes straight down the table; hit it off the toe and it comes out at an angle, up to about fifty degrees. So aiming is lining the man slightly off the ball before you swing, not pointing at a target.

Why did my kick miss the ball completely?

Because no man on that rod was lined up with it. A rod is men at fixed spacing, so there are gaps it simply cannot play, and a swing through one of those gaps does nothing at all.

What happens when the ball gets stuck?

It is served back into the middle after three seconds. A ball can end up somewhere no rod reaches, and on a table with eight rods that would otherwise be the end of the game rather than a pause in it.

How do the opponents get harder?

Their rods slide faster, and they read the ball a little sooner. Foosball is a game of getting a man in front of the ball in time, so rod speed is the one number that decides whether they can. Your own rods move at the same speed at every rung.

How long is a match?

Two and a half minutes at most. Three goals ends it early, which happens in roughly a third of measured matches; otherwise whoever is ahead at the whistle wins and a level score is a draw.
