Bridge Builder is a free online bridge building game with a real structural simulation underneath it. You place beams between fixed anchor points to span a gap, then press Test and a loaded vehicle drives across while every beam stretches, compresses and colours itself green, amber or red according to how hard it is working. The lesson the game is built around is the one every engineer learns first: a rectangle folds and a triangle does not. A deck laid straight across the gap with nothing above it will always sag through the red line, however many beams you spend on it, because a flat span carries weight only by drooping. Route that weight up into a triangulated truss and back down into the anchors and the same deck barely moves. Six gaps get progressively wider, and each gives you a beam budget — using fewer beams than you are allowed is what earns three stars.
How to play Bridge Builder
- Tap one anchor point and then another to place a beam between them. Tapping the same pair again removes it.
- Grey points are fixed to the ground and never move. Blue points are free and will move under load.
- You must connect every point along the road before you can test — the load needs a continuous deck to drive on.
- The counter at the top shows how many beams you have used against the budget for that gap.
- Press Test Bridge and a loaded vehicle drives across. Beams turn green, amber then red as they take more strain.
- The dashed red line is the sag limit. If the road drops below it, or a beam snaps, the crossing fails.
- Get the load all the way to the far side to clear the gap. Using fewer beams than the budget earns more stars.
Tips
- Triangles, not rectangles. Four beams in a square can fold flat under load; three beams in a triangle cannot change shape at all without one of them changing length.
- A flat deck with no structure above it will never work, on any level. It sags roughly twice as far as the limit allows no matter how the beams are arranged.
- Connect the top chord to the fixed anchors at each end. A truss that floats above the deck with nothing tying it to solid ground is just extra weight.
- Watch which beams go red on a failed run and add a triangle around them, rather than adding beams everywhere.
- Diagonals do the real work. A vertical post holds the deck up, but it is the diagonal that stops the whole frame leaning over.
- Three stars need about 70% of the budget, so once a design works, try deleting the beams that stayed green the whole way across.
FAQ
Is Bridge Builder free to play?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no account and no purchases. Your unlocked gaps and best star rating per gap are saved on your own device.
Why does my bridge sag even though no beams broke?
Because deflection is the main failure, not breakage. A flat deck carries a load only by drooping into a shallow cable shape, and it droops far past the red line long before any beam is stretched enough to snap. Triangulating the deck sends the load into the anchors instead, and the same span barely moves.
What do the beam colours mean?
How close that beam is to its breaking strain. Green is comfortable, amber is working hard, red is nearly failing. They update live during the test, so a beam that flashes red as the load passes over it is telling you exactly where to add a triangle.
Can I join two grey anchor points together?
No. Both are already fixed to the ground, so a beam between them would be free rigid structure that costs you nothing and holds everything up. The game refuses it.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Building is two taps per beam with a generous hit area around each point, and the board is drawn square so it fills a phone screen.
