Sports Quiz is a free online sports quiz game you can play in your browser, with no download and no account. Each round gives eight clues — "A cone of goose feathers fixed into a rounded cork base" — and you name the answer from four choices. After every pick you see which family of sports it belongs to and one more fact, with every measurement in its proper unit. There are 167 sports, terms and pieces of kit from all over the world, from football, basketball and cricket to badminton, sumo, Vovinam and sepak takraw, and eight levels that get harder in a way you can feel: at first the wrong answers come from other sports, and on the last level all four are the same kind of thing from the same family. A second mode, Hosts & champions, asks 74 questions on who hosted every Summer Games since 1896 and every men's football World Cup since 1930, and who won those World Cups.
How to play Sports Quiz
- Choose a mode at the top: Name it (eight levels) or Hosts & champions (practice rounds with a best score).
- In Name it, read the clue on the card — it describes a sport, a term or a piece of kit without using its name — and pick the answer from four choices: tap one, or press 1-4 or A-D.
- After each pick the right answer lights up green, and underneath you see its family of sports, what sort of answer it is and one more fact.
- Press Next clue (or Enter) to move on. A round is eight clues; the dots along the bottom show which you got right.
- Get at least 4 of 8 right to open the next level, the level's mark for two stars, and all eight for three stars.
- In Hosts & champions, each question names a year and asks which city hosted the Summer Games, which country hosted the World Cup, or which team won it. A note about that tournament appears after every answer.
Tips
- Ask two questions about every clue: which family of sports is it from (goal games, racket games, bat and target games, athletics and swimming, combat sports, or snow, ice and board sports), and is the answer a sport, a term or a piece of kit? On the early levels either answer usually leaves just one choice.
- From level 5 on the wrong answers share the family or the sort of answer, and on level 8 they share both — then the details decide it: a full point that wins a contest outright is judo's ippon, while a set sequence of moves practised alone is karate's kata.
- Words like "the word for" or "when" point to a term; "a pad", "a line" or "the area where" point to kit or a place; "players", "teams" and "fighters" usually describe a whole sport.
- In Hosts & champions the wrong answers are real hosts and finalists from nearby years, so pin the year first: the Summer Games come every four years from 1896 (but not in 1916, 1940 or 1944), and World Cups fall in the years between, from 1930.
- For "who won", the team that lost that year's final is usually one of the four choices — remember who was beaten, not just who reached the final.
FAQ
Is Sports Quiz free to play?
Yes. Sports Quiz is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.
Which sports does the quiz cover?
Six families of sport from around the world: goal and basket games, such as football, basketball and water polo (29 answers), racket and net games, such as tennis, badminton and sepak takraw (25), bat, club and target games, such as cricket, golf and pétanque (29), athletics, swimming and cycling (30), combat sports, such as judo, sumo, Muay Thai and Vovinam (27), and snow, ice and board sports (27) — 167 in all. Each answer is a sport or event, a term or rule (offside, deuce, ippon) or a piece of kit or a place (the shuttlecock, the oche, the dohyo).
Will the answers go out of date?
No. The quiz sticks to rules, kit, words and history that do not change, so it never asks about current champions, records, rankings or players still competing. Hosts & champions only covers tournaments already played, up to the 2024 Summer Games in Paris and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Every measurement comes with its unit, such as the marathon's 42.195 km or the 24 seconds of a basketball shot clock.
What makes the later levels harder?
The wrong answers. On level 1 they come from other families of sport and are other kinds of answer, so a clue about a tennis term might sit next to a combat sport, a cricket item and a winter event. By level 8 all four are the same kind from the same family, such as four combat-sport terms. Measured on 1,000 rounds per level, a player who knows only each answer's family or only what sort of answer it is gets all eight right on level 1 but about two of eight on level 8.
How do stars work?
Four right out of eight passes a level and opens the next one. Two stars need the level's own mark, which is one more than that family-or-kind guesser's usual score there — 7 on the first levels, 3 on the last. Three stars need all eight.
What is Hosts & champions?
A second mode with 74 questions: which city hosted each of the 30 Summer Games from Athens 1896 to Paris 2024, which country hosted each of the 22 men's football World Cups from Uruguay 1930 to Qatar 2022, and which team won each of those World Cups. Every round of eight mixes all three, never asks two questions about the same World Cup, and gives a note about each tournament after the answer. It plays in rounds with a best score.
Will I see the same questions again?
Each new round steers around the last 40 questions you were asked, so repeats come back only once you have played through much of the bank. Playing a level again deals a different round.
Does Sports Quiz work on mobile?
Yes. Tap an answer on a phone or tablet; on a computer you can also play with the keyboard, using 1-4 or A-D to pick and Enter for the next question.
