Movie Quiz is a free online movie quiz game you can play in your browser with no download and no account. Each round gives you eight clues — a short description of a famous film's story, from Chaplin's silent comedies and Hitchcock's thrillers to Pixar, Studio Ghibli and the superhero films of the 2010s — and asks which film it is, with four titles to choose from. After every answer the game shows the film's year and director and one more fact about it. Eight levels get harder in a way you can feel: on early levels the wrong titles are other kinds of film from other decades, while on the last level all four are the same kind of film from the same era. Prefer names behind the camera? Who directed it? shows a title and four directors who were all making films at the same time. All 200 films and their clues were written for this game, with no posters or stills, and the facts stick to things that do not change — years, directors, stars and Best Picture winners.
How to play Movie Quiz
- Choose a mode at the top: Name the film (eight levels) or Who directed it? (practice rounds with a best score).
- In Name the film, read the clue on the card — what the film is about, never its title — and pick the film from the four titles: tap one, or press 1-4 or A-D.
- After each pick the right title lights up green, and underneath you get the film's year, its director and one more fact about it.
- Press Next film (or Enter) to move on. A round is eight films; the dots along the bottom show which you got right.
- Get at least 4 of 8 right to open the next level, the level's mark for two stars, and all eight for three stars.
- In Who directed it?, the card shows a film's title and year; pick its director from four people who were all making films in those years.
Tips
- Place the clue in time first. Silent stars, Technicolor musicals and the studio era point before 1960; DeLoreans, mixtapes and synthesizers point to the 1980s; phones and the internet point later.
- Then ask what kind of film it is — a comedy, a thriller, a musical, an animated film. On early levels the wrong titles are other kinds of film from other decades, so either question usually leaves one answer.
- From level 5 on the wrong titles share the decade or the kind of film, and by level 8 they share both. That is where the details in the clue — a city, a name, a prop — decide it.
- Read the fact after each answer: the same directors come back, and knowing who made what is the fastest way into Who directed it?.
- In Who directed it?, use the year. All four names were working then, but most of them are known for one kind of film — a war film is rarely by the comedy director.
FAQ
Is Movie Quiz free to play?
Yes. Movie Quiz is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.
Which films are in the quiz?
There are 200 well-known films, from The Gold Rush (1925) to Parasite (2019): Hollywood classics, Hitchcock thrillers, musicals, westerns, blockbusters, Disney, Pixar and Studio Ghibli animation, and films from Japan, Korea, Germany and Spain. Every clue and fact was written for this game, and the facts stick to things that do not change — release years, directors, stars and Academy Award winners — rather than box-office records that go out of date.
What makes the later levels harder?
The wrong titles. On level 1 they are other kinds of film from other decades, so a 1980s comedy can sit next to a silent science fiction film, a 2010s superhero film and a 1960s western. By level 8 all four are the same kind of film from the same era. Measured on 1,000 rounds per level, a player who knows only the decade of each film or only what kind of film it is gets all eight right on level 1 but about two of eight on level 8.
How do stars work?
Four right out of eight passes a level and opens the next one. Two stars need the level's own mark, which is one more than that decade-or-kind guesser's usual score there — 7 on the first levels, 3 on the last. Three stars need all eight.
What is Who directed it?
A second mode: the card shows a film and its year, and you pick its director from four. It asks about the 39 directors with more than one film in the quiz — Hitchcock, Spielberg, Kubrick, Miyazaki, Nolan and more — and the three wrong names made films within twelve years of it (a little further apart for the few films from the 1920s and 1930s, when the quiz has fewer directors to choose from). It plays in rounds of eight with a best score.
Are there spoilers?
No more than a film's trailer would give away. Clues describe the premise — who the story is about and what sets it going — and never the twist or the ending.
Will I see the same films again?
Each new round steers around the last 48 films you were asked, so repeats only come back once you have played through much of the list. Playing a level again deals a different round.
Does Movie Quiz work on mobile?
Yes. Tap a title to answer on a phone or tablet; on a computer you can also play with the keyboard, using 1-4 or A-D to pick and Enter for the next film.
