Animal Quiz is a free online animal quiz game for kids and families, played in your browser with no download and no account. Each round reads out eight "Who am I?" clues in the animal's own voice — "I hang upside down in rainforest trees and move very, very slowly" — and you pick the animal from four. After every answer the game says which group it belongs to, where it lives, one fun fact and, for most animals, what its baby is called. Eight levels get harder in a way you can feel: at first the wrong answers are different kinds of animals from different places, and on the last level all four are the same kind from the same place, like four ocean mammals. A second mode, Which group?, asks whether an animal is a mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, insect or arachnid, with tricky ones such as whales, bats, penguins and spiders in every round. All 142 animals were written up for this game.

How to play Animal Quiz

  1. Choose a mode at the top: Who am I? (eight levels) or Which group? (practice rounds with a best score).
  2. In Who am I?, read the clue on the card — the animal describes itself without saying its name — and pick it from the four animals: tap one, or press 1-4 or A-D.
  3. After each pick the right answer lights up green, and underneath you see its group, where it lives, a fun fact and, for most animals, what its baby is called.
  4. Press Next clue (or Enter) to move on. A round is eight clues; the dots along the bottom show which you got right.
  5. Get at least 4 of 8 right to open the next level, the level's mark for two stars, and all eight for three stars.
  6. In Which group?, read the animal's name and pick its group from four: mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, insect or arachnid. Every round has tricky animals in it.

Tips

  • Ask two questions about every clue: what kind of animal is it (fur, feathers, scales, six legs?) and where does it live (ocean, river, forest, grassland, desert, ice, or a farm or garden?). On the early levels, either answer usually leaves just one animal.
  • From level 5 on the wrong answers share the kind of animal or the place, and on level 8 they share both — then the little details in the clue decide it: a pouch, a tusk, a song, a sticky toe.
  • Mammals breathe air and feed their babies milk, so whales, dolphins and bats are mammals even though they swim or fly.
  • Count the legs: insects have six, spiders and scorpions have eight, so spiders are arachnids, not insects.
  • Smooth, damp skin means an amphibian (frogs, newts, salamanders); dry, scaly skin means a reptile (snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles).

FAQ

Is Animal Quiz free to play?

Yes. Animal Quiz is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.

Is Animal Quiz good for kids?

Yes — it was written for children and families. The clues use simple words and are told in the animal's own voice, the facts are friendly rather than scary, and nothing on the page is gory. Younger children enjoy it most with a grown-up reading the clues aloud.

Which animals are in the quiz?

There are 142 animals: 59 mammals, 28 birds, 16 fish, 12 insects, 11 reptiles, 7 amphibians, 3 arachnids and 6 animals without a backbone such as the octopus and the jellyfish. They come from the ocean, rivers and lakes, forests and jungles, grasslands, deserts, icy lands and high mountains, and farms, homes and gardens.

How accurate are the facts?

The quiz sticks to facts that are settled and do not change: what group an animal belongs to, where it lives, what it eats and what its baby is called. It avoids population numbers and "endangered" labels, which change over time, and only calls an animal the biggest, tallest or fastest where every textbook agrees, like the blue whale, the giraffe and the cheetah.

What makes the later levels harder?

The wrong answers. On level 1 they are different kinds of animals from different places, so a desert clue might sit next to a fish, a bird and an insect. By level 8 all four are the same kind from the same place, such as four ocean mammals. Measured on 1,000 rounds per level, a player who knows only each animal's group or only where it lives gets all eight right on level 1 but about two of eight on level 8.

How do stars work?

Four right out of eight passes a level and opens the next one. Two stars need the level's own mark, which is one more than that group-or-home guesser's usual score there — 7 on the first levels, 3 on the last. Three stars need all eight.

What is Which group?

A second mode for learning how animals are sorted. You see an animal's name and pick its group from four. Every round of eight holds four tricky animals — like a whale that looks like a fish, a bat that flies like a bird or a spider that looks like an insect — and the group it is often mistaken for is always one of the choices. It plays in rounds with a best score.

Will I see the same animals again?

Each new round steers around the last 40 animals you were asked, so repeats come back only once you have played through much of the list. Playing a level again deals a different round.

Does Animal Quiz work on mobile?

Yes. Tap an answer on a phone or tablet; on a computer you can also play with the keyboard, using 1-4 or A-D to pick and Enter for the next clue.
