Quote Guess is a free online quote guessing game you can play in your browser with no download and no account. Each round shows eight famous lines — from Shakespeare and Jane Austen to Lincoln, Churchill, Darwin and Neil Armstrong — and asks who said or wrote each one, with four names to choose from. After every answer the game shows where the line really comes from: the play, novel, poem, speech or letter, and the year. Eight levels get harder in a way you can feel: on early levels the wrong names come from other eras and other walks of life, while on the last level every name is the same kind of person from the same era as the right one. Prefer words to names? Finish the line blanks out one word of each quote and gives you four to choose from. Every one of the 118 lines has a recorded source, and lines famous for being pinned on the wrong person are left out on purpose.

How to play Quote Guess

  1. Choose a mode at the top: Who said it? (eight levels) or Finish the line (practice rounds with a best score).
  2. In Who said it?, read the line on the card and pick the person who said or wrote it from the four names — tap a name, or press 1-4 or A-D.
  3. After each pick the right name lights up green, and the line's real source appears underneath: the book, play, poem, speech or letter, with its year.
  4. Press Next line (or Enter) to move on. A round is eight lines; the dots along the bottom show which you got right.
  5. Get at least 4 of 8 right to open the next level, the level's mark for two stars, and all eight for three stars.
  6. In Finish the line, one word of each quote is blanked out; pick the missing word from four choices to complete it.

Tips

  • Work out the era first. "Thee", "'tis" and "o'er" point to Shakespeare's time or the Romantic poets; talk of nations, wars and the Moon points to the speeches of the last century.
  • Then ask what kind of person would say it: a line from a speech sounds like it was meant to be heard by a crowd, a line from a novel often sets a scene or speaks to the reader.
  • Early levels mix eras and walks of life, so ruling out the names that do not fit usually leaves one. On the last levels every name fits both, so it comes down to really knowing the line.
  • Read the source after every answer — the same writers come back, and knowing which book or speech a line is from is the fastest way to place the next one.
  • In Finish the line, say the quote out loud: the rhythm of a famous line usually rules out the words that do not belong.

FAQ

Is Quote Guess free to play?

Yes. Quote Guess is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.

Are the quotes real?

Yes. Every one of the 118 lines has a recorded source — the play, novel, poem, speech, letter or interview it appears in — and the game shows it after each answer. Lines written in another language are marked as translated. Lines that are famous mainly for being pinned on the wrong person, such as "Let them eat cake" or "Be the change you wish to see", are kept out on purpose.

What makes the later levels harder?

The wrong names. On level 1 they come from other eras and other walks of life, so a line from a Victorian novel can sit next to a Roman general, an astronaut and a modern president. By level 8 all four names are the same kind of person from the same era. Measured on 1,000 rounds per level, a player who knows only the era of each line or only the kind of person behind it gets all eight right on level 1 but about two of eight on level 8.

How do stars work?

Four right out of eight passes a level and opens the next one. Two stars need the level's own mark, which is one more than that era-or-kind guesser's usual score there — 7 on the first levels, 3 on the last. Three stars need all eight.

What is Finish the line?

A second mode: each quote has one word blanked out, and you pick it from four words. It plays in rounds of eight with a best score, and shows who said the line and where once you answer.

Will I see the same quotes again?

Each new round steers around the last 40 lines you were asked, so repeats only come back once you have played through much of the bank. Playing a level again deals a different round.

Does Quote Guess work on mobile?

Yes. Tap a name to answer on a phone or tablet; on a computer you can also play with the keyboard, using 1-4 or A-D to pick and Enter for the next line.
