Tie Dye is a free online tie dye game that runs in the browser with no download and no account. The shirt arrives already folded: in half, into quarters, or corner to corner along the diagonal. You dye the bundle, tapping colour onto the cells you can actually reach, and the rest of the shirt stays hidden. Only when you unfold does the pattern appear — each dab of dye printed onto every layer the fold pressed it against. That order of operations is the whole game: the skill is predicting a symmetry rather than drawing one, which is what tie dye really is and what makes it a different job from a colouring game where the mirror image appears live under your finger. Every order card is made by dyeing a bundle at random and unfolding it, so the pattern on the card is always something the current fold can actually produce. Fold it again, adjust the bundle and unfold as often as you like — nothing is timed and nothing is lost. Twelve orders walk through all three folds with up to five dye colours.
How to play Tie Dye
- The dashed shirt on the left is the order. The grid on the right is your bundle, folded the way the level says.
- Cells you can reach are bright; the dimmed ones are underneath the fold and cannot be dyed directly.
- Pick a dye and tap cells of the bundle. Tapping a cell again with the same dye rinses it back to plain cloth.
- While you are dyeing, the shirt is not shown — that is the point. Work out where the fold will print each dab.
- Press Unfold It to open the bundle out. Every dab prints onto each layer it was pressed against: two cells for a half fold, four for quarters, mirrored across the diagonal for a corner fold.
- Fold It Again puts you back to the bundle with your dye still on it, so you can adjust and unfold again.
- Match the order exactly to finish. Fresh Shirt starts the same order over; New Order generates a different pattern.
- Nothing is timed and there is nothing to lose.
Tips
- Work out the crease first. A half fold mirrors left to right, quarters mirror both ways, and a corner fold mirrors across the diagonal so a dab at row 5 column 2 also lands at row 2 column 5.
- Count the coloured cells on the card. Divide by the number of layers in your fold and you know how many dabs the bundle needs.
- On a corner fold, cells on the crease itself print only once — they are a single thickness of cloth, so they are the ones to use for a lone spot of colour.
- A pattern on the card that is not symmetric under your fold cannot be made by dyeing alone. Since every card is generated from a bundle, look again: the symmetry is there.
- Unfold early and often. It costs nothing, and one look teaches the mapping faster than any amount of staring at the bundle.
- To fix one wrong cell, fold again and rinse just that cell rather than starting over.
- For the busiest orders, do one colour at a time across the whole bundle. It is much easier to check than working cell by cell.

Why can I not see the shirt while I am dyeing?
Because predicting the fold is the game. Real tie dye works exactly this way — you dye a bundle and find out on unfolding — and a version that showed the mirror image live would be a symmetry colouring book instead.
Which folds are there?
Three: folded in half, which mirrors left to right; folded into quarters, which mirrors both ways at once; and folded corner to corner, which mirrors across the diagonal.
Is every order pattern actually achievable?
Yes. Each card is created by dyeing a bundle at random and unfolding it, so a matching set of dabs always exists for the fold you are given.
Can I undo a dab?
Yes — tapping a cell again with the same dye rinses it, and Fold It Again lets you edit the bundle after seeing the shirt. Nothing is permanent.
Is it timed?
No. Stars come from matching the order and how few dabs it took, and you can unfold as many times as you like.
