Jelly Shift is a free online one-button reaction game: you are looking straight down a tunnel, the jelly flies away from you and never slows down, and walls keep coming. Each wall has a single slit in it — one lying flat across, one standing upright — and the jelly has to be the right shape when it arrives. Hold the button and it squashes wide and short; let go and it stands narrow and tall. That is the entire control scheme, and the entire game is when you press it. The head-on view is not decoration. Seen from the side, a jelly stuck in the middle of the lane can only differ in height, and a short shape fits everything a tall one fits, so half the walls would have no answer at all. Head-on it is the cross-section that has to match, so each of the two shapes fits exactly one of the two slits and every wall genuinely asks a question. It gets harder in two directions at once: the walls come closer together and the jelly moves faster, so the window between one wall and the next shrinks from about two and a half seconds down to a tenth of a second. That floor is deliberately below human reaction, because a runner whose difficulty stops rising never ends — an earlier version stopped tightening while the window was still comfortable and a bot cleared two thousand gates before the test gave up. Measured against reaction-time bots, a fast player gets to the high eighties and a slow one from the low fifties to the high sixties, and the run ends on the player rather than on the seed.

How to play Jelly Shift

  1. Press Play. You are looking down a tunnel, with the jelly in the middle of the view.
  2. Hold space, or press anywhere on the lane, to squash the jelly flat and wide.
  3. Let go and it stands up narrow and tall. That is the whole control.
  4. Walls come toward you, each with one slit in it. A pink wall has a slit lying flat across — that one needs the flat jelly.
  5. A blue wall has a slit standing upright — that one needs the tall jelly.
  6. The shape is checked at the moment the jelly reaches the wall, so changing late is the same as not changing at all.
  7. Clearing a wall scores a hundred. Clearing one without changing shape since the last wall scores forty more.
  8. Hitting a wall costs a life. The wall you hit is taken away rather than re-run — being sent back into it at the same speed is not a second chance.
  9. Three lives, and no end: the walls keep coming closer together and the jelly keeps going faster.
  10. The window between two walls starts at about two and a half seconds and shrinks to a tenth of one, so every run ends eventually.

Tips

  • Read two walls ahead, not one. The decision you are making is not "what is this wall" but "do I need to change between this one and the next".
  • A run of walls that all want the same shape is free points — the bonus pays forty a wall for not touching the button.
  • Change early rather than accurately. The shape is only checked at the wall itself, so there is no cost to being early and no recovery from being late.
  • Colour is faster to read than shape. Pink means hold, blue means release; you will be reading colours long before you can see the slit.
  • Your resting shape matters. Tall is the default and costs nothing to hold, so between walls let go rather than hovering on the button.
  • When the speed doubles, stop trying to see the slit and go by rhythm: the spacing is regular, and the walls are alternating more than they look.
  • A hit clears the wall, so do not panic after one — the next wall is the normal distance away and you are still moving at the same speed.
  • Measured against reaction-time bots, the difference between a 450ms player and an 840ms one is about fifteen gates. Most of the score is in reading ahead, not in reacting faster.

FAQ

Is Jelly Shift free to play?

Yes. It runs free in your browser with no download, no install and no account.

What are the controls?

One button. Hold space, or press anywhere on the lane, to squash the jelly flat; let go to stand it tall. There is no steering and no brake.

How do I know which shape a wall wants?

By the slit, and faster by the colour. A pink wall has a slit lying flat across it and wants the flat jelly; a blue wall has an upright slit and wants the tall one.

Why is the view down the tunnel rather than from the side?

Because from the side the game would not work. A jelly stuck in the middle of a lane can only differ in height, and a short shape fits every gap a tall one fits — half the walls would have no answer. Head-on, the cross-section has to match, so each shape fits exactly one slit.

I changed shape right as I hit the wall and still lost a life.

The shape is checked at the moment the jelly reaches the wall. An earlier version checked just after, which made every wall passable with no reaction at all — a bot that always switched one tick late cleared three hundred gates without a scratch.

Does it ever stop getting harder?

No, and that is on purpose. The walls close up and the pace rises until the window between two of them is about a tenth of a second, which nothing can clear. A runner whose difficulty stops rising simply never ends.

What is the bonus for?

Clearing a wall without having changed shape since the last one pays forty extra. It rewards spotting a run of walls that all want the same thing, which is what reading ahead actually buys you.

Does Replay this lane give the same walls?

Yes. Every wall is drawn from the seed and the whole game is a fixed-step simulation, so the same seed sends the same sequence at you at the same speed.
