Direction Memory is a free online arrow sequence game that runs in the browser with no download and no account. A route lights up on a compass pad one arrow at a time, and then you enter it yourself. For the first four levels that is straight recall. After that the badge above the pad changes, and so does the job: play the route back from the last step to the first, or swap every left for a right, or turn each arrow ninety degrees before you press it. Holding a route while operating on it is a different skill from just holding it, which is why level five feels harder than level four even though it is shorter. Twelve levels, four ways of twisting the route, eight directions once the diagonals arrive. Nothing is timed once the flashing stops.

How to play Direction Memory

  1. Each round starts with a short pause, then the route flashes on the compass pad one arrow at a time.
  2. The badge above the pad tells you what to do with the route. REPLAY means enter it as you saw it; BACKWARDS means start from the last arrow; MIRRORED means swap left and right; QUARTER TURN means turn every arrow ninety degrees clockwise.
  3. When the flashing stops the pad lights up. Tap the arrows in the order the badge asks for. Arrow keys work for the four cardinal directions on desktop.
  4. The row of steps under the pad fills in as you go, so you can see how far through the route you are.
  5. A wrong arrow ends the round immediately and the correct answer is shown underneath, marked step by step so you can see whether you lost the route or fluffed the twist.
  6. Three correct routes clear a level, or four from level nine onward.
  7. Levels one to four use only north, east, south and west. The diagonals join in from level three onward, on an eight-way pad.
  8. New Route flashes a different route for this round; Restart Level puts the counter back to zero.

Tips

  • Say the route out loud as it flashes — "up, right, down-left" — rather than trying to picture it. Words survive a transform much better than a mental image does.
  • On BACKWARDS levels, do not try to reverse the route in your head after it finishes. Store it and read it back off the end; reversing while you are still storing it is what causes the slips.
  • MIRRORED is easiest if you remember that north and south do not move. Only the arrows with an east or a west in them flip, so half the route often needs no work at all.
  • For QUARTER TURN, turn your hand rather than your head. Physically pointing at the arrow you saw and then swinging your finger a quarter turn right is far more reliable than doing the arithmetic.
  • The pad never changes shape, so north is always the same button. Building muscle memory for the positions frees up attention for the route itself.
  • Chunk long routes in threes. Eight arrows held as three groups is normal; eight held separately is not.
  • If the answer row shows the right arrows in the wrong order, the twist is your problem. If it shows different arrows, it is the route. They need different practice.

FAQ

Is Direction Memory free to play?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All twelve levels are included and unlock in order.

How is this different from a classic memory sequence game?

A classic sequence game only ever asks for the sequence back exactly as shown, so it tests how much you can hold. Two thirds of the levels here ask for it back changed — reversed, mirrored or rotated — so you have to hold the route and work on it at the same time. That is a noticeably harder task even at the same length.

What do the badges mean?

REPLAY means enter the route unchanged. BACKWARDS means enter it from the last arrow to the first. MIRRORED means swap east and west, so a north-east becomes a north-west while north and south stay put. QUARTER TURN means rotate every arrow ninety degrees clockwise, so north becomes east.

Can I use the keyboard?

The four arrow keys work for north, east, south and west. The diagonals have no standard key, so on eight-way levels you tap or click them — every pad button is focusable, so Tab and Enter work too.

What happens if I press the wrong arrow?

The round ends there and the correct answer appears under the pad, with each step marked so you can see where it went wrong. It costs you the round and one miss, nothing more.

Is there a time limit?

Only while the route is flashing. Once the pad lights up you can take as long as you like to enter it, and nothing counts down.

How long do the routes get?

Three arrows on level one, eight by level twelve, flashing about twice a second. Each time a new twist is introduced the route gets shorter for a level, so a new idea never lands on top of a new record length.

Does Direction Memory work on a phone?

Yes. The pad is a square nine-button grid sized to the screen, so all eight directions stay comfortably tappable in portrait.
