Shell Game is a free online cup-and-ball tracking game you can play instantly in the browser, with no download and no account. The balls are shown to you, the cups come down, and then the cups start trading places — quickly, and more of them each level. When the shuffle stops you say which cup hides which ball, and the cups lift to show whether you were right. Nothing is hidden from you and nothing is rigged: every exchange is drawn on screen, the answer is fixed before the first cup moves, and the cups genuinely carry the balls with them. What makes it hard is only that your eyes have to keep up. The ladder runs from three cups and one ball at a gentle pace to six cups and three differently coloured balls at roughly two and a half exchanges a second, and tracking three balls at once is a different skill from tracking one — you are no longer following a single thing but holding a whole arrangement in your head. Clear three or four rounds to finish a level; a level with no misses at all is three stars. There is no timer and no way to lose, only rounds you did not get.
How to play Shell Game
- Each round starts with the cups raised so you can see exactly where every ball is. Take that moment — it is the only look you get.
- The cups come down and begin trading places, two at a time. One passes in front and one swings behind, so you can always tell which cup went where.
- When the shuffling stops, tap the cup you think the ball is under.
- From level five there is more than one ball, each a different colour. You are asked about them one at a time — the banner tells you which colour it wants, and a cup you have already chosen cannot be chosen again.
- All the cups lift once you have answered, and the balls show where they really were. A pick that was wrong is marked with a dashed ring.
- You need three correct rounds to clear a level, or four on the last three levels. A wrong round costs you nothing except the round itself.
- Misses are counted for the star rating only. Clearing a level without a single miss is three stars.
- New Round deals a completely different shuffle if you would rather not replay the one in front of you. Restart Level puts the round counter back to zero.
Tips
- Watch the cup, not the ball. The ball is invisible the whole time it is moving, so the only thing to follow is the piece of pottery it is riding in.
- Pick a landmark. Following your cup relative to the end of the row is much easier than following it in the abstract, especially on six cups.
- When two cups swap, one goes over and one goes under. If you lose your cup, that difference is the fastest way to recover it — you only need to remember which of the pair you were watching.
- Blink between swaps, not during them. The exchange is where the information is; the pause after it is free.
- With two or three balls, do not try to track them all equally. Follow one properly, and note the other two by where they end up relative to it.
- A ball can end up back under the cup it started in. That is not a trick or a bug, and on three cups it happens roughly a third of the time — do not talk yourself out of an answer just because it seems too easy.
- If a level is faster than you can read, play a round or two of the level below it. The speed steps are deliberately small and the habit carries up.
FAQ
Is Shell Game free to play?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All twelve levels are there, unlocking in order as you clear them.
Is the game rigged like a street shell game?
No, and this is the important difference. A street version relies on the ball being palmed, which is why it is unwinnable. Here the whole round — where each ball starts and every single exchange — is decided before the first cup moves, the balls really do travel with their cups, and nothing happens off screen. If you follow the right cup you win, every time.
Is there any real money involved?
None. There is nothing to bet, nothing to win and nothing to buy. It is a memory and attention exercise, not a wager.
How do I keep track of more than one ball?
Most players do best by following one ball properly and remembering the others by their position relative to it, rather than trying to give all three equal attention. Tracking an arrangement turns out to be a different skill from tracking a single object, which is exactly why the later levels feel like a step up rather than just more of the same.
Is there a time limit?
No. The shuffle has a pace, but once it stops you can take as long as you like to answer, and nothing counts down anywhere.
Can I lose?
Not really. A wrong round simply does not count toward the three or four you need, and you can play as many rounds as you like. Misses only affect the star rating at the end of the level.
How fast does it get?
The first level swaps a pair of cups every 0.62 seconds across five exchanges. The last runs twenty-four exchanges at a quarter of a second each, with six cups and three balls to keep straight.
Does Shell Game work on a phone?
Yes. Tapping a cup works the same as clicking, and the table scales itself to the width of the screen, so six cups stay comfortably tappable in portrait.
