Barrel Climber is a free online arcade climbing game for one player: six sloping girders joined by ladders, barrels rolling down from the top, and a clock. The rule the whole thing turns on is that a barrel is both the danger and the points — jumping one scores a hundred, touching one costs a life. So the careful route up is worth almost nothing and the profitable route is the one that puts you in the way on purpose. Every girder slopes the opposite way to the one below it, so a barrel wanders down the scaffold rather than falling straight, and at a ladder it may take the ladder instead of rolling on, which is what stops you learning one safe column. The two ladders on each floor are never in the same column as the ones above, so climbing is a traverse as well as a climb, and the traverse is where the barrels are. The clock is worth points at the end of a scaffold, so hurrying is rewarded as well as punished. The climber has its own fixed speed, set by the game rather than by how fast you can press a key — the whole thing is a fixed-step simulation on a column-and-floor grid, so the same seed rolls the same barrels and a replay is a real replay. Four scaffolds, each faster than the last, and three lives to get through them.
How to play Barrel Climber
- Press Play. You start at the bottom left of a scaffold of six girders and have to reach the top one.
- Move left and right with the arrow keys or the pad, and climb with up and down when you are standing on a ladder.
- Press space or the jump button to jump. You are off the ground for a moment, and that is the only time a barrel cannot hurt you.
- Jumping over a barrel scores a hundred points. Touching one on the ground costs a life — the same barrel, the same cell, a completely different outcome.
- Reaching a new floor scores fifty, so climbing is worth something even when you are not jumping anything.
- Every girder slopes the opposite way to the one below it, so barrels wander down the scaffold instead of falling in a line.
- At a ladder a barrel may take the ladder down instead of rolling on, so no column is reliably safe.
- The two ladders on a floor are never in the same column as the ones above, so you always have to walk along a girder to keep climbing.
- You are safe from barrels while you are on a ladder, which makes a ladder the place to wait when a floor is busy.
- The clock is worth a point a tick at the end of a scaffold, so a fast climb is worth more than a careful one — if you survive it.
- Four scaffolds, each with barrels coming faster than the last. Three lives for all of them.
Tips
- Jump barrels on purpose. A hundred points is two floors' worth of climbing, and the barrels are coming whether you use them or not.
- Wait on a ladder, not on a girder. You cannot be hit while climbing, so half-way up a ladder is the safest place on the scaffold.
- Watch the slope. A girder that slopes away from you brings barrels toward you slowly; one that slopes toward you brings them fast.
- Jump early rather than late. The jump lasts a fixed time and you cannot move during it, so jumping as a barrel arrives leaves you standing still when the next one does.
- Cross a floor in one go if it is clear. The traverse between ladders is where you are exposed, and stopping half-way is how a run ends.
- The clock bonus is real money. A scaffold finished with half the clock left is worth more than the barrels you would have jumped taking it slowly.
- Barrels sometimes come down a ladder. If you are climbing one and a barrel is above you on the same column, drop back rather than meet it at the top.
- Your speed is fixed by the game, not by how fast you press. Hammering a key does not move you sooner, so spend the time reading the floor instead.
FAQ
Is Barrel Climber free to play?
Yes. It runs free in your browser with no download, no install and no account.
How do I score?
A hundred for every barrel you jump over, fifty for every floor you climb, a thousand for each scaffold, and a point for every tick left on the clock when you finish one.
Why would I jump a barrel rather than avoid it?
Because that is where the points are. A barrel you never meet is worth nothing, so the profitable route up is the one that puts you in front of them on purpose.
Can a barrel hit me while I am climbing?
No. You are safe on a ladder, which makes half-way up one the best place to wait out a busy floor. You are also safe in the air during a jump.
Why do the barrels not roll in a straight line?
Every girder slopes the opposite way to the one below it, so a barrel reverses direction each time it drops. At a ladder it may also take the ladder down instead of rolling on, so no column is reliably safe.
What is the clock for?
It runs down through a scaffold and what is left of it is added to your score when you reach the top. Running out costs a life, so it pushes both ways.
Does pressing faster move me faster?
No. The climber has a fixed speed set by the game rather than by the key repeat rate, so a fast keyboard is not an advantage and the difficulty is the same on every machine.
Does Replay this run deal the same game?
Yes. Everything is a fixed-step simulation on a column-and-floor grid with no frame timing in the rules, so the same seed rolls the same barrels down the same ladders.
