How to play Yatzy
- Tap Roll Dice to roll all five dice. You get up to 3 rolls per turn.
- After the first roll, tap any die to hold it — held dice keep their value and won't be rerolled.
- Roll again to reroll everything you haven't held, as many as two more times, then tap a scorecard category to lock in your current dice as that category's score.
- Every category can only be filled once for the whole scorecard. If your dice don't match a category you need, you can still tap it to scratch it for zero.
- The upper section (Ones through Sixes) scores the sum of matching dice; fill it to 63 points or more and you earn a 35-point bonus.
- The scorecard ends once all 13 categories are filled. Clear that level's score target to win it; fall short and Try Again deals a fresh scorecard at the same target.
Tips
- Early rolls are for information — don't lock in a mediocre category on turn 2 if several good ones are still open; the pressure to fill categories only really bites in the final few turns.
- A Small Straight (30) or Large Straight (40) only needs the right spread of dice, not a specific combination, so don't reroll a straight you've already got just to chase a bigger score elsewhere.
- Track your upper-section total as you go — needing an average of 3 dice per number to hit 63 means it's often worth holding an extra matching die even in a so-so upper-section roll.
- When nothing on the board matches your dice, scratch your worst remaining category (usually Yatzy or a straight) rather than wasting a rare good roll on a low-value one.
