Quad Word Grid is a free quad word game you play in your browser. Four hidden five-letter words, four boards, one guess at a time: every word you type is scored on all four boards at once, green for a letter in the right place, yellow for a letter in the word but somewhere else, grey for a letter that is not there. Find all four within the try limit to win. Nine levels go from two words in eight tries up to four words in seven, with "in order" levels where each board only opens once the one before it is found. The keyboard shows each letter’s news for every board at once. There are 740 hidden words and 4,804 accepted guesses, new words whenever you want them, no daily wait, no download and no sign-up, and it works on phones.

How to play Quad Word Grid

  1. Each board hides one five-letter word. Level 1 has two boards; from level 3 on there are four. The level name tells you how many tries you have.
  2. Type any five-letter word on your keyboard or the on-screen keys and press Enter. Words that are not in the word list, or that you have already tried, are turned away without costing a try.
  3. Your guess is scored on every board that is still open. A green letter is in that board’s word in exactly that place, a yellow letter is in the word but in another place, and a grey letter is not in the word at all (a repeated letter only turns yellow as many times as the word has it).
  4. Guess a board’s word exactly and that board is found and stops taking guesses. Each key on the keyboard is split into one patch per board, coloured with what that letter has shown on each board.
  5. Find every word before the tries run out to win the level and open the next one. On "in order" levels only the first unfound board shows its colours; the next board opens when it is found, already filled in with everything you guessed so far.
  6. Run out of tries and the missing words are shown. Press New words for a fresh set on the same level at any time.

Tips

  • Open with a word that tests five common, different letters, such as STARE, CRANE or SLATE. With four boards, one good opener tells you something about all four words at once.
  • Finish any board you can pin to a single word straight away: that guess is never wasted, because it is scored on the other boards too.
  • When no board is close, guess a word that tries new letters over one that only fits the most-solved board. In 300 test games of Quad Classic (four words, nine tries), a computer player that did this won 300, against 253 for one that always guessed a word fitting its most-solved board.
  • Read the keyboard patches before you guess. A letter that is grey on three boards but yellow on the fourth only matters to that one board, so spend it there.
  • On "in order" levels the shut boards still count your guesses, so a word that fits a later board is never lost — it opens already found.

FAQ

Is Quad Word Grid free to play?

Yes. Quad Word Grid is completely free to play in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.

Does Quad Word Grid work on mobile?

Yes. On a phone you tap the on-screen keyboard, and the boards and keys resize to fit the screen held upright or sideways. On a computer you can just type: letter keys, Enter to guess and Backspace to delete.

How do you win?

Find every hidden word before you run out of tries. Each guess counts once, however many boards it is scored on, so with four boards and nine tries you have five tries to spare beyond the four words themselves. Stars are given for finishing quickly: on Quad Classic, six tries or fewer earns three stars and seven earns two.

Is this like Quordle?

It is the same kind of game: one guess played on four word boards at once. Quad Word Grid is a separate, free game, not affiliated with Quordle. It adds a level ladder from two words to four, "in order" levels where boards open one at a time, and new words whenever you like instead of one puzzle a day. For a single word at a time, try Word Guess on this site.

What words are used?

The hidden words are 740 common five-letter English words — no plurals ending in S, no past tenses, no names and nothing unkind — taken from the public SCOWL word lists. You can guess any of 4,804 words, including plurals, past tenses and British spellings, so most words you think of are accepted.

How hard are the nine levels?

They go from Duo (two words, eight tries) to Quad Master (four words, seven tries). We measured each level with three computer players of different skill on the same 300 sets of words. The middle one won 291 of 300 Duo games, 253 of Quad Classic and 74 of Quad Master, and together the two weaker players won fewer games at every level than the level before.

What are the "in order" levels?

On Chain levels you see only the first board you have not found yet. The next board opens when you find it, already filled in with every guess so far, and a word you happened to guess early opens already found. You cannot work on all four at once, which makes them a little harder than the matching Quad level: the middle test player won 247 of 300 at Chain Classic against 253 at Quad Classic.
