Word Board is a free online word tile board game you can play instantly in your browser, no download and no account needed. Draw a rack of 7 letter tiles from a shared bag and place them on an 11x11 board to spell real words — your first word of each level has to cross the center star, and every word after that has to connect to a tile already on the board. Squares carry letter and word multipliers (2x and 3x), so landing a tricky letter like a J or Q on the right square, or stretching a word across a double-word square, can multiply your score fast. Placing a tile that also completes a word running the other direction scores that crossing word too, exactly like the genre you already know. Tap a rack tile, then tap a board square to place it; Recall All returns a placement you are not happy with, and Shuffle Rack reorders your tiles without spending a turn. Work through 10 levels, each a fresh tile bag and board, with a rising target score to reach — hit it and the next level unlocks, with 3 hints per level and unlimited replays.
How to play Word Board
- Each level deals you a rack of 7 letter tiles drawn from a shared bag, shown at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap a rack tile to select it, then tap an empty board square to place it there. Tap a placed-but-not-yet-played tile again to recall it back to your rack.
- Your first word of the level must be at least 2 tiles long and must cross the center star square. Every word after that must connect to a tile already on the board — either extending an existing word or crossing one at a right angle.
- Tap Play Word to score your placed tiles. If they spell a real word (or words — a tile that completes a word in both directions scores both), the tiles lock in and your score goes up.
- Board squares carry letter and word multipliers: 2x/3x letter squares multiply just that tile's value, and 2x/3x word squares multiply the whole word's score — but only for tiles placed that turn.
- Reach the level's target score to clear it and unlock the next one. Recall All undoes an unplayed placement, Shuffle Rack reorders your tiles, and Hint (3 per level) names a word your current tiles can spell.
Tips
- Save high-value letters like J, Q, X, and Z for a double- or triple-letter square rather than playing them on a plain square the moment you draw them — the same tile can be worth two or three times as much a few turns later.
- Look for chances to play through an existing tile at a right angle instead of only extending words in a straight line — a single well-placed tile that completes two words at once scores both of them in one turn.
- A word that reaches a triple-word square is worth chasing even if it costs you a couple of extra turns to set up, since the word multiplier applies to every tile you placed that turn, not just the one on the bonus square.
- If your rack has no obvious play, use Shuffle Rack first — it costs nothing and sometimes just reordering the tiles makes a word you overlooked easier to spot.
FAQ
Is Word Board free to play?
Yes. Word Board is completely free to play online with no download, no account, and no in-game purchases.
Does Word Board work on mobile?
Yes — tap a rack tile and then tap a board square with your finger on phones and tablets, or click with a mouse on desktop.
Why can't I play any word I want?
Word Board checks every word against a curated word list rather than an exhaustive dictionary, and only allows words of 3 letters or longer (no 2-letter plays or blank/wildcard tiles). If a word you tried is not accepted, it is likely just outside that curated list.
What happens when the tile bag runs out?
Your rack simply refills with however many tiles are left each turn, down to zero once the bag is empty. Each level's target score is tuned to be reachable within one bag, and Recall All plus Shuffle Rack cost nothing, so you can keep adjusting your plan as tiles run low.
Do I have to place tiles in a straight line?
Yes. Every tile you place in a single turn must line up in one row or one column with no gaps, exactly like the genre this game is based on.
How many levels does Word Board have?
There are 10 levels, each with a fresh tile bag and board and a higher target score to reach than the last. Any level you have unlocked can be replayed any time.
