Monster Maker is a free online monster creator that runs in the browser with no download and no account. Six slots — body, eyes, mouth, horns, limbs and pattern — with four parts each, and every part carries three numbers: scare, speed and smarts. Nothing is best at everything. The spikiest horns are the most frightening and the slowest; the long legs are quick and dim. That trade-off is what turns a dress-up box into a game, because the order on the desk asks for minimum totals and one named part it must include, and the parts you would pick for one request are rarely the ones that satisfy another. Each request ticks green as your monster meets it, so the order is a checklist rather than a critic, and everything it does not mention stays yours. Every order is generated from a monster that already fills it, so no client is asking for something impossible. Level one is a free lab with no order at all. Save PNG writes your monster out as a picture. Nothing is timed.
How to play Monster Maker
- The order at the top lists what the client wants: minimum stats and, often, one specific part.
- The six rows underneath are the slots. Use the arrows to cycle through the four parts in each.
- The header shows the running totals for scare, speed and smarts — every part contributes to all three.
- Requests tick green as soon as your monster meets them, and Deliver lights up when they all do.
- Parts trade off against each other, so pushing one stat up usually pulls another down. Meeting two requests at once is the actual puzzle.
- Level one is a free lab with no order. Each level after it adds another request.
- Save PNG writes the monster out as a picture at any point.
- Fewer swaps earns more stars, and nothing is timed.
Tips
- Read the stat requests first and work out which slot can move that stat furthest — body and horns swing the most.
- A named part request pins that slot, so satisfy it first and treat the remaining five slots as your budget.
- The "none" horns are worth remembering: no scare at all, but the second-best speed in the slot.
- When two stats are both demanded, look for the middling parts rather than the extremes. Tentacles and four eyes are the classic compromise picks.
- Pattern looks cosmetic but it is not — scales and stripes each carry three scare, which is often the last point you need.
- If a stat is one short, change the pattern or the mouth before touching the body. Those cost the least elsewhere.
- Cycle in whichever direction reaches the part you want faster; the arrows wrap both ways and stars come from swaps.
FAQ
Is Monster Maker free to play?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy. All eight levels are included.
Why do the parts have stats?
Because a dress-up toy has no wrong answer and therefore no finish. Stats turn the parts into a budget: nothing is best at all three, so an order that wants scary *and* quick forces a real choice.
Can an order be impossible?
No. Each one is generated from a monster that already satisfies it, and it never asks twice about the same stat or the same slot.
How many parts are there?
Six slots with four parts each, so 4,096 different monsters, all drawn as vector art from the same six numbers the stats come from.
Can I save my monster?
Yes. Save PNG renders the monster to a 480-pixel image you can download and use anywhere.
Is there a free build mode?
Yes — level one is a free lab with no order at all, and the pickers work the same way, so it is the place to see what every part looks like.
Is it timed?
No. Stars come from how few part swaps it took to fill the order.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The monster scales to whichever screen dimension is tighter, the slot rows stack two to a line, and everything is a tap.
