Balloon Float is a free online balloon game about keeping a balloon in the air. Your balloon has lost a little of its lift and sinks slowly, so you keep it rising with puffs of air: tap the sky near it and a puff blows out from your tap, pushing the balloon away — straight up from below, up and across from one side, down from above. Every puff costs one of three breaths, and breath comes back slowly, so where you blow matters more than how fast you tap. Float up past thistles and thorny branches, ride warm air, slip round rain showers and let the birds go by on your way to the clouds. Soft colours, quiet sounds and twelve stages that grow from an easy meadow morning to a squally climb. No download, no sign-up — play with a mouse, a finger or the keyboard.

How to play Balloon Float

  1. Pick a stage and tap the sky, or press Space or Enter, to start. The balloon rises off the meadow and begins to sink slowly.
  2. Tap near the balloon to send a puff of air from that spot. The puff pushes the balloon away from where you tapped: tap right under it (or on it) to lift it, below and to one side to send it up and across, above it to bring it down.
  3. The nearer you tap, the stronger the puff. Within about a metre it blows at full strength; beyond about two and a half metres it does not reach the balloon at all.
  4. You have three breaths, shown as blue circles at the bottom of the sky. Each puff uses one, even a puff that misses, and a breath comes back every 0.6 to 0.75 seconds.
  5. The view follows the balloon up but never back down. If the balloon sinks to the misty bottom edge — or back into the meadow at the start — the flight is over. Thistles and thorny branches pop it.
  6. Float up through the seeds: each dandelion seed is worth 10 points. Reach the clouds at the top to clear the stage and unlock the next one; more seeds earn the second and third stars.
  7. Later stages add breezes that carry the balloon sideways, warm air that lifts it, rain that pushes it down, birds that bump it aside, gusts announced by arrows at the side, and a dusk stage where you can only see a little way up. On a keyboard, the up arrow (or W, or Space) puffs from below, left and right puff it up and across, down puffs from above, and P pauses. Switching to another tab pauses the flight.

Tips

  • Blow from below and a little to the side you want to leave: the balloon always moves away from your tap.
  • Keep a breath in hand. Three quick taps leave you with nothing for the gust or the bird that comes next.
  • Start moving early. The balloon drifts on after every puff, so a sideways puff now is a gentle turn, and one at the last moment is a scramble.
  • In a breeze, lean into it: a puff against the wind before you reach the thorns saves a desperate one beside them.
  • Warm air is free height. Stay in the shimmering column and let it carry you while your breath comes back.
  • Rain pushes the balloon down. Go round a shower when you can; if you must go through, go with a full breath.
  • A seed off to the side is only worth it if the way to it is clear. The seeds are the score, but the top is the star.

FAQ

Is Balloon Float free to play?

Yes. Balloon Float is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and nothing to buy. All twelve stages are here and unlock in order.

How do I keep the balloon up?

Tap the sky just under the balloon. Each tap sends a puff of air from that spot, and the puff pushes the balloon away from it — so a tap below lifts it. Tap below and to one side to send it up and across, and above it to bring it down. Tapping on the balloon itself lifts it straight up.

Why does the balloon sometimes not move when I tap?

Either the tap was too far away — a puff only reaches about two and a half metres, and is strongest within about a metre — or you were out of breath. You have three breaths; every puff uses one, even one that misses, and they come back one at a time.

How does scoring work?

Each dandelion seed you float through is worth 10 points. Reaching the clouds at the top earns one star; the second and third stars need more seeds. Every sky of a stage has the same number of seeds, and on most stages the third star means collecting nearly every one of them.

Is every stage possible?

Yes. Each sky is built around a hidden way up first, and every thistle and branch is placed clear of it. Before a sky is ever shown, a careful pilot flies it through the game itself to the top, and a sky the pilot cannot finish is never dealt. The tests check this on 41 skies of every stage.

Can I win by tapping anywhere, or by not tapping at all?

No. Without a puff the balloon settles back into the meadow within a few seconds. A player who taps random spots of the sky without looking — every fifth of a second or as slowly as once a second — never reached the top once in 41 flights of any stage, because most of those puffs miss and some push the balloon down.

How are the star scores set?

They are measured, not guessed. Three simulated players — a casual, a regular and a sharp one, each with a human reaction time and taps that land a little off where they meant — fly every stage 41 times. Two stars is the regular player’s middle score and three stars the sharp player’s.

Is the game the same whatever my screen’s frame rate?

Yes. The flight is worked out on a fixed clock of 120 steps a second, and every tap and key press counts from the moment it happened, not from the next frame drawn. A 60 Hz phone and a 144 Hz monitor fly exactly the same flight.

How is Balloon Float different from Juggling or Kite Flight?

Juggling is about catching on the beat with two hands, and Kite Flight about letting a line run with the gusts. In Balloon Float you push one balloon about with puffs from wherever you tap, so the skill is choosing where to blow and saving your breath — and the sky changes as you climb.

Does Balloon Float work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the sky with a finger to puff. The tall sky fits a phone held upright, and it plays sideways too.
