War is the card game with no rules to learn: split the deck, flip the top card each, and whoever shows the higher rank scoops both. Match ranks and it is war — you each bury a stack face down and flip again, with the whole pile going to the winner of the showdown. Take every card and you win. This free online version deals you a computer opponent called Otto and no setup at all: no download, no account, nothing to shuffle. Twelve levels vary the shape of the fight rather than the difficulty — short 32-card decks for quick games, war stakes from one card up to six, and battle caps from 40 up to 250, where the bigger pile takes the win if neither side has been wiped out yet. Auto-play runs the flips for you if you would rather watch the swing than tap it out.

How to play War Card Game

  1. The deck is split evenly between you and Otto, face down. Neither of you can see what is coming.
  2. Tap Flip to turn the top card of each pile. Aces are high, then kings, queens, jacks and down to twos.
  3. Whoever flipped the higher rank takes both cards and adds them to the bottom of their pile.
  4. If both cards are the same rank, it is war. Each side buries the level's war stake face down and flips one more card. The higher of those two takes the entire pile, buried cards included.
  5. A war that ties again cascades straight into another war, and the pot keeps growing.
  6. Take every card and you win. If the battle cap is reached first, whoever holds the bigger pile takes the game — that cap is what stops a game of War running forever.

Tips

  • There are no decisions in War, so there is no strategy to get better at. Use Auto-play if you would rather watch the pile-share bar swing than tap through every flip.
  • A big war is where games actually turn. On level 12 each war costs six buried cards a side, so a single showdown can move a quarter of the deck.
  • The short-deck levels only use sevens through aces, so matching ranks — and therefore wars — happen far more often. Pick those when you want a fast, wild game.
  • The bar under the table shows what share of the deck you hold. If it barely moves for twenty battles, the cap will decide the game, and being ahead when it lands is what matters.
  • Levels with a low battle cap are the quickest wins to unlock the next level, since the game stops at the cap rather than waiting for a total wipeout.

FAQ

Is the War card game free to play online?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no download, no account, and no in-game purchases. Level progress saves on your own device.

Is there any skill in War?

No, and this version does not pretend otherwise. Every outcome is decided by the shuffle. The 12 levels change the deck size, the war stake and the battle cap — the shape and length of a game — not how well you can play it.

What happens on a tie in War?

A tie starts a war. Each player puts the level's stake of cards face down and then flips one more. The higher of those deciding cards takes everything on the table. If they tie too, another war starts on top of the same pot.

Does a game of War ever end?

It can run a very long time, which is why every practical version caps it. Here each level has a battle cap between 40 and 250; when it is reached, whoever holds more cards wins.

Is War a good card game for kids?

Yes — it is usually the first card game children learn, because the only thing you need to know is which rank is higher. Nothing to read, one button to press, and it works on a phone or tablet.
