Maze Escape is a free online maze game where every maze is generated fresh rather than drawn by hand. The generator produces what mathematicians call a perfect maze: exactly one route between any two points, no loops and no sealed-off pockets, so there is always a way through and never a shortcut. The exit is placed at the furthest cell from where you start, and from level three a key is hidden off the main route, so the fastest way out means a deliberate detour rather than a straight run. Your trail is shaded as you go, which is what turns a big maze from guesswork into a readable map of where you have already been. Ten levels grow from an eight-by-eight starter to a twenty-by-twenty labyrinth, and each is scored against the shortest route that maze actually allows.
How to play Maze Escape
- Move with the arrow keys, the on-screen arrow pad, or by swiping in the direction you want to go.
- You cannot walk through walls — a blocked move does nothing and plays a short bump.
- The white dot is you, the gold dot is the key and the larger dot is the exit.
- From level three the exit stays shut until you have the key. It turns from grey to green the moment you pick the key up.
- Cells you have stood on are shaded, so at a glance you can tell an unexplored corridor from one you have already tried.
- Press Hint to flash the route to your next objective for a couple of seconds. It costs nothing but is noted on your result.
- Escape before the clock runs out. Three stars need a route close to the shortest possible one, in under half the time limit.
Tips
- Follow one wall. Keeping your hand on the left-hand wall the whole way through is a genuine strategy in a perfect maze — it always reaches the exit eventually, though rarely quickly.
- The shaded trail is the real tool. When you hit a dead end, backtrack to the last unshaded opening rather than re-walking corridors you have already cleared.
- The exit is always the furthest cell from your start, so it is never around the first corner — heading broadly away from the start is a safe opening.
- The key is deliberately off the direct route. If you find yourself passing the exit without it, keep going: the key is down one of the branches you skipped.
- Retry gives you the identical maze, so a level that beat the clock is one you already partly know. New Maze is the button for a fresh layout.
- Score counts moves against the best possible route for that maze, not against a fixed number — so a big maze is not automatically a worse score than a small one.
FAQ
Is Maze Escape free to play?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no account and no purchases. Your unlocked levels and best star rating per level are saved on your own device.
Is every maze guaranteed to be solvable?
Yes, by construction. The generator carves a perfect maze — a spanning tree over every cell — so every cell is reachable from every other and there are no closed-off areas. That is a property of the algorithm, not something checked afterwards.
Do I get the same maze if I retry?
Retry replays the identical maze, because each one is generated from a seed tied to the level and attempt number. Choose "New Maze" on the result card if you want a completely different layout.
How is the star rating worked out?
By comparing your moves with the shortest route that particular maze allows, including the key detour. Three stars need to be within about a third of optimal and inside half the time limit; two stars are much more forgiving.
Can I play the maze game on a phone?
Yes. You can swipe anywhere on the maze to move, or use the arrow pad below it. The maze is drawn square and scales to your screen, so the largest levels still fit.
