Snake is a free online arcade classic you can play instantly in your browser, no download or account needed. Guide your snake around a checkered board using the arrow keys, WASD, swipes, or the on-screen directional pad — eat an apple and your tail grows by one segment, but a longer snake means less room to maneuver. Each level asks you to eat a target number of apples before the board turns against you: the first few levels wrap you around to the opposite edge when you cross a border, but from level 5 onward the walls themselves become solid and static rock obstacles start appearing on the board. Play through 15 levels that ramp the pace from a relaxed crawl up to a lightning-fast sprint, layering in more obstacles and a longer apple count at every step. Clear a level and the next one unlocks immediately — no waiting between rounds — and Try Again resets the same level instantly after a crash.

How to play Snake

  1. Steer the snake with the arrow keys, WASD, a swipe on the board, or the on-screen directional pad.
  2. Eating an apple grows your tail by one segment and counts toward that level's apple target.
  3. On levels 1-4, crossing an edge wraps you around to the opposite side of the board; from level 5 on, the walls are solid and crossing one ends the run.
  4. Avoid the rock obstacles that start appearing from level 3 onward, and avoid running into your own tail.
  5. Reach the level's apple target to clear it and unlock the next one — levels get faster and more crowded as you climb.

Tips

  • Plan a wide loop instead of hugging the edges — a long snake needs open space to turn, and corners run out of room fast.
  • Queue your turn a beat early; each level ticks faster than the last, so reacting at the very last cell gets less forgiving over time.
  • On wall levels, treat the border like an obstacle from the start rather than relying on old wrap-around habits.
  • If you crash, Try Again restarts the same level immediately at the same difficulty — no need to replay earlier levels.

FAQ

Is Snake free to play?

Yes. Snake is completely free to play online with no download, no account, and no in-game purchases.

Does Snake work on mobile?

Yes, you can swipe on the board or use the on-screen directional pad, so it plays the same on phones, tablets, and desktop.

How many levels does Snake have?

There are 15 levels, ramping from a slow, obstacle-free first level up to a fast-paced board packed with rock obstacles and solid walls.

Do the walls always kill you in Snake?

Not at first — levels 1 through 4 wrap you around to the opposite edge. From level 5 onward the walls become solid, so crossing one ends the run.
