Egg Sort is a free online egg sorting puzzle you can play in the browser with no download and no account. The tray arrives scrambled and the only move you have is a slide: push a whole row one step sideways, or a whole column one step up or down, with the egg falling off one end reappearing at the other. Get every row down to one color and the tray is done. Because nothing is ever lifted out, every move disturbs several eggs at once, and a row you just finished can be broken by a careless column — which is what makes it a puzzle rather than a tidying job. Each tray is scrambled from a solved one by a recorded list of slides, so the shortest solution is never longer than the number shown as par, and you can undo as far back as you like.
How to play Egg Sort
- Arrows sit around the outside of the tray — one each side of every row, one above and below every column.
- Tapping an arrow slides that whole row or column one step. Whatever falls off one end comes back on the other, so no egg is ever lost.
- The tray is finished when every row holds a single color. Which row ends up with which color does not matter.
- Rows that are already one color are outlined green, so you can see progress without counting.
- Sliding a row sideways never changes which colors are in it. Only column slides move eggs between rows, which is why columns do the real work.
- The header shows your move count against par — the length of the slide list the tray was scrambled with, so a solution that short definitely exists.
- Undo steps back one slide, and counts as a move. Reset Tray puts the tray back to how it was dealt and zeroes the counter.
- Finishing within two moves of par is three stars; within eight is two.
Tips
- Work one row at a time and finish it last. Gather a color into a single row using columns, then leave that row alone — every later column slide has to avoid it.
- Count before you slide. A color has exactly as many eggs as the tray is wide, so if four reds are already spread across four different columns, one column slide each brings them level.
- Row slides are free repositioning. They never change a row's contents, so use them to line eggs up under the column you want to move without spending any real progress.
- The last two rows solve themselves surprisingly often. Once the rows above are uniform, the remaining eggs have nowhere else to be.
- Go the short way round. Sliding a five-tall column down three times is the same as sliding it up twice, and par assumes you noticed.
- If you break a finished row, undo immediately rather than trying to repair it. Repairing usually costs more than the slide that caused it.
- On the six-wide trays, aim to get each color into one column first, then rotate those columns into place. It is a longer plan but a much shorter solve.

Is every tray solvable?
Yes, exactly. Each tray starts solved and is scrambled by a recorded list of slides, so undoing that list is a guaranteed solution — and its length is the par shown in the header, not an estimate.
How is this different from Ball Sort or Water Sort?
Those games move one thing at a time into a container and never disturb what is already sorted. Here nothing is ever picked up: a slide moves a whole line at once, so finishing one row can undo another. It is a permutation puzzle, closer to a sliding tile puzzle than to a pouring one.
Does it matter which row gets which color?
No. The tray is done as soon as every row is a single color, in any order. That gives you far more freedom than it first looks.
Is there a move limit or a timer?
Neither. Par is only there to score stars — you can take as many moves as you like, and undo is unlimited. There is no way to fail a tray.
Why does undo count as a move?
So par means something. If rewinding were free you could try every slide in turn and still finish with a perfect score, which would make the star rating meaningless.
How big does the tray get?
Three by three with three colors at the start, six wide and five tall with five colors by level twelve, scrambled with fifteen slides.
